Able Radio search for volunteers

Able Radio's new studio
Able Radio operates from state-of-the-art studio facilities in Pontypool

A new radio station aimed at disabled people is seeking volunteers of all abilities to get involved at their base in Torfaen.

Do you have a disability or limiting health condition? Are you also creative, a good communicator and welcome a challenge?

Able Radio is seeking a small number of people to join an informal group to shape the way forward for this national project.

This is a Social Enterprise broadcaster run by, and provided for, people with disabilities and life limiting medical conditions. They aim to create opportunities for people with disabilities, increasing skills, raising self esteem and acting as a step to entering employment.

The objective is to operate as a live radio station that will provide content relevant to the day to day lives of people with disabilities as well as to the wider community. These voluntary activities will take place within a studio workshop in Pontypool which has the advantage of full wheelchair access and comprehensive support facilities.

Here, in an informal setting, you will have an opportunity to learn a range of broadcast skills including editing, programme making and production. You will also help shape the future of the radio station and the type of programmes to be produced.

Able Radio also welcomes volunteers with a radio/media background to assist with production and other non-broadcast duties. Due to the nature of this project, principal on-air presentation is reserved for people who are disabled.

The project feels it is offering an exciting volunteer opportunity for all involved. It is open to anyone across south east Wales and beyond who are willing to travel to the Pontypool studio. Training will be available to volunteers who on completion will need to satisfy certain criteria regarding safety etc.

All Able Radio asks is for a regular commitment of time and that can be a little as two hours a week. The station will operate Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm although this will extend over time. You will be based at the studio centre within Ty Nant Ddu, Hospital Road, Pontnewynydd, Pontypool.
