Each month volunteers from the Monmouthshire and Brecon Trust, the Canal Volunteer Group and Goytre Boat Owners Association meet to clean up a different area of the canal.
Since May 2007 nearly 600 bags of rubbish and over 100 trolleys have been removed.
Even in the urban population centres of Newport and Cwmbran the canal is home to a wide range of wildlife and also livestock.
The industrial heritage of the region is in evidence here at the bridge at Griffithstown
Many areas of the canal travel through populated areas, this allows it to be used as an alternative walking route and play area for many. However this everyday usage has led to an increasing casual litter problem.
The tranquility and beauty of the countryside surrounding the canal can be seen even in the more urban areas.
