College centenary in Cathays Park

William Douglas Caroe designs

Cardiff University's main building is celebrating its centenary. The building was designed by William Douglas Caroe - in 1904 this is how he envisaged the completed building, the first part of which opened in 1909.

University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire

Created in 1883 as the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire, its first home was in Newport Road in premises later occupied by the Cardiff Royal Infirmary.

Opening of Viriamu Jones research laboratory

In 1912 King George V and Queen Mary visited the University's new base in Cathays Park to declare open the Viriamu Jones research laboratory.

Prince of Wales opening Tatem Laboratories

In 1930 the Prince of Wales opened the Tatem Laboratories in the main building.

125th Anniversary celebratins

A spectacular illumination onto Main Building marked the start of the University's 125th anniversary celebrations in 2008.

Students graduating

Main Building is a focal point for staff, students and visitors and has formed the backdrop to many graduation photographs.

To mark the centenary an exhibition on the history of Main Building is on at the university's Viriamu Jones Gallery.
