As a former president of America did an impression of a fish in front of me, all I could think of was: "How the heck did I end up here?". Sooner or later someone will find me out, will discover I'm hopelessly under qualified for this, and I'll be exposed for who I really am. I should have had a career in insurance - and no doubt I'd have enjoyed having my own desk-tidy and writing my name on the bottom of my stapler. My grandfather had suggested it would be solid employment and at the age of 18, I had my own ill-fitting suit, a briefcase for my sandwiches and a job which involved insuring air conditioning units for farmers in case a cow ever fell on them. For once in his life, though, my grandfather was wrong and I was hopeless, and to this day I've no idea how insurance works. After being asked to leave school (actually the headteacher pleaded because I was ruining his exam league table) I returned to education and became the proud owner of a B-Tec in pop music - which involved growing my hair long and playing guitar for nearly three years, until a lecturer became so sick of my lack of musical ability that she suggested I became a journalist. Ten years in local, regional and Sunday newspapers passed as quickly as former US president doing his best fish impression (and the exact details of that are for another time) - as have the last five years in radio. I also hopelessly under-qualified to be a husband, a step-father to three teenage boys and father to my twins girls. But I've somehow managed to become all three. And at least I can do an impression of a former US president doing an impression of a fish - and my little girls think that's brilliant.
