Ticket plug for 'Proms in the Abbey'

Classics such as Jerusalem and Nessun Dorma will be played

Back after a year's hiatus, the classical night of Glastonbury Abbey's Extravaganza has been brought back but despite fans asking for the event's return, tickets are still available.

Festival organiser Michael Eavis said he brought the night back as he was inundated with people asking for it.

The normally annual night was cancelled in 2008 because of poor ticket sales of the previous year's classical nights.

The Abbey Extravaganza is a two-night music event held at Glastonbury Abbey which Michael Eavis organises as a 'thank you' to the people of Glastonbury for putting up with the disruption the main Glastonbury Festival causes.

Saturday night - which is a sell-out - sees Status Quo and Bjorn Again play. The Extravaganza has been running since 1996 but has not seen a full house since Jools Holland took to the stage in 2003.

'Best tribute act in the world'

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will perform on Sunday night, playing classics such as Jerusalem, the Nutcracker and Nessun Dorma.

"The local people really love that programme so we upset a lot of people taking it away from them so they wanted it back," said Mr Eavis.

"We could do with another couple of thousand to make it work nicely.

"People have asked for it and I've given them exactly what they've asked for so let's hope that they turn up and enjoy themselves and have a good evening."

He said the old classical favourites will be performed, and there will also be an impressive firework display and water fountains. Eavis added that his mother was "crazy for it and can't wait".

Although Eavis did not see Status Quo and Bjorn Again perform at this year's Glastonbury Festival, he said he has been impressed with those acts when he's seen them previously, saying Bjorn Again was "the best tribute act in the world".

"They've got lots of followers - we could have run that for two nights," he said.
