Hundreds of organisations are using grant money from Children in Need to help improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people.

Despite the economic conditions, the 2008 appeal raised a record breaking £37.8 million which has helped more than 700 projects across the UK.

Over the last year in Shropshire more than £130,000 has been awarded to three projects in local grants.

This year, Friday, 20 November, marks the 30th BBC Children in Need appeal.

The Woodside Family Groups Project were awarded £90,485 in April to help provide drop-in groups during term time for pre-school children and their parents and carers.

In July, Mount Gilbert School in Telford and North Shropshire Home-Start were awarded grants totalling almost £40,000.

The money helped Mount Gilbert School provide a summer activity scheme for young people in Shropshire with disabilities.

At North Shropshire Home-Start a £15,000 Children in Need grant allowed the charity to provide drop-in play sessions for children across four locations in the north of the county.
