The stigma of mental health
Lindo Jones

An estimated one in four people will suffer a mental health problem in the next 12 months - approximately one person in every family.

Shropshire Primary Care Trust (PCT) believes as many as 59,000 people could have some degree of mental disorder.

The figures include a variety of problems, including depression, eating disorders and alcohol abuse.

The PCT said half of all women in Shropshire and a quarter of men will at some point suffer from depression.

The cost of mental health to the British economy is estimated at £49 billion, with the overall costs almost double that, according to government figures.

The theme of this year's Mental Health Awareness Week in Shropshire, is overcoming fear and anxiety.
