In pictures: Quantum Leap's last rib

The last rib of Quantum Leap is put in place

Engineers prepare to put the last rib of the Quantum Leap sculpture in place. Each rib weighs three and half tonnes. Quantum Leap is a new sculpture in Shrewsbury, commissioned to mark the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin.

The rib is made from locally quarried stone aggregate. It's the 31st rib to be winched into place.

The last rib flies through the air, lifted by a crane and attached by chains. Quantum Leap is 12 metres (40 feet) tall and is 17.5 metres long (57 feet).

The crane lowers the rib down through the scaffolding. The public get their first view of the finished structure on 12th July 2009.

Across the river you get a better view of how the rib is slotting into place. The huge sculpture will sit within a new 'geo-garden' on the riverside off Smithfield Road.

The sculpture is encased in scaffolding which will eventually be taken away. The total cost of Quantum Leap is £350,000.

Quantum Leap has been described as a slinky toy, human vertebrae and DNA. It will be unveiled in September.
