BBC Oxford discusses Bishops in The Lords
MP Evan Harris, Lord Bradshaw of Wallingford and Rt Rev John Pritchard with Phil Mercer

BBC Oxford presenter Phil Mercer has been looking at bishops in the House of Lords.

A Royal Commission is currently looking at reforming the Upper House and the bishops are a major area of controversy.

There are 26 'Lords Spiritual', as they are known. They account for about four percent of the House of Lords.

They are given a seat because of their job with the Church of England but should they be there?

Phil's discussion asked if they are a stabilising religious influence or an unwanted legacy of medieval times.

In the studio was the secularist Oxford West and Abingdon MP, Evan Harris, the peer, Lord Bradshaw of Wallingford, and Rt Rev John Pritchard, the Bishop of Oxford.

You can listen to Phil Mercer on Sunday Breakfast from 6 til 9 on 95.2FM or if you want to tell him your views email Phil on mercer@bbc.co.uk
