In 2007 Oxfordshire County Council announced that it was looking at using incineration plants to reduce the Oxfordshire waste going to landfill.

The companies involved in the proposed sites at Ardley, near Bicester and Sutton Courtenay have faced stiff opposition to their plans.

But on Monday 9 August the scrutiny committee at the council voted in favour of one of the schemes.

It is the latest development in a story that BBC Oxford has followed since 2007...

Plans were rejected by county councillors.

Robert Ryan, project manager, said: "Viridor is disappointed with the committee's decision to refuse our application, despite recommendation for approval by the council's planning officers and a clear need to divert waste from landfill."

Councillors voting against the plans said the benefits of a waste disposal site did not outweigh the cost to the environment.
