John Stirland
John blames his love for manure and garden compost on his star sign

John has been with BBC Radio Nottingham for over 30 years, answering his first gardening question with Dennis McCarthy.

He estimates that he has answered around 40,000 questions over the years.

And along with fellow gardener Martin Fish, he has won the Best Phone In Award at the Garden Writers Guild.

His favourite radio moment was broadcasting on Radio Nottingham from Keurkenhof Gardens in Holland on a beautiful spring day.

When not gardening or on the radio John loves wildlife watching and all things countryside. He loves keeping up with the farming calendar and listening to the radio. He refuses to have a television in his house.

John was born "just after the war" at Villa Farm in Nuthall, Nottinghamshire when it was just a village.

He blames his love of manure and garden compost on his star sign - he is a Taurus.

24 hours in Nottinghamshire

John's perfect 24 hours in Nottinghamshire would start with a breakfast of fresh homemade bread, local bacon and egg. He would spend the morning gardening.

Lunch would be walked off with a stroll along the River Trent around Hoveringham. John would then enjoy dinner with good company and a late walk under a moonlit sky.

John admits to an eclectic jukebox at home mixing AC/DC with Clannad with a hint of Classical.

If he was into "new-fangled technology" he'd currently have Carmina on his MP3 player.

Did you know?

John says he would much rather have been a farmer than a gardener.

He once refused trials with Nottingham Forest.

John has a phobia of house spiders.

John Stirland is on BBC Radio Nottingham 9.00 - 10.00am, Sundays.
