On Friday, 6 November, 2009, Meadow Lane Lock re-opened to the public after £1.5m improvements. The work has linked the towpath of the Nottingham Beeston Canal with Victoria Embankment.
The work, which has taken eight months to complete, establishes a green traffic-free route for boaters and walkers, and helps complete a 10-mile circular cycle route.
The changes include a new boaters amenity block and moorings for boats on the River Trent side. The towpath has also been completely resurfaced.
It is hoped the new facilities will help regeneration by providing a gateway to greener areas away from the city. The programme was championed by Nottingham Waterside Limited (NWL).
Meadow Lane Lock is the gateway to the waters of the River Trent. More than 400,000 people and 3,000 boaters visited the Nottingham Beeston Canal last year.
The Meadow Lane Lock improvements were led by British Waterways, Nottingham City Council, Groundwork Greater Nottingham, Nottingham Regeneration Ltd and the Environment Agency.
John Heppell, MP for Nottingham East, said: "This not only provides a 'missing link' in Nottingham's waterways, it also develops a safe route for cycling to work or a place to have a pleasant stroll during a lunch break."
Mr Heppell, who officially opened the new-look lock, added: "It will be an amenity enjoyed by the people of Nottingham and another attraction for visitors to the city."
