Notts Afghan and Iraq fatalities

Eleven Notts soldiers have died in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001

Since 2001 British troops have been stationed in Afghanistan, most recently fighting in the southern province of Helmand.

Casualties have risen year on year with the stepping up of operations against the Taliban in this part of the country.

Until 2008 they were also stationed in Iraq where they also suffered losses.

Eleven soldiers from Nottinghamshire are among the personnel who have lost their lives.

Here we remember them.

Casualties in Afghanistan

Sean Upton, 35, from Beeston Rylands, was killed in July 2009 while on foot patrol in Sangin, Helmand.

Twenty-year-old L/Cpl Kieron Hill, from Nottingham, died in an explosion during an operation in the Garmsir area of Helmand in May 2009.

Rifleman Adrian Sheldon, died in an explosion in Sangin, Helmand. The 25-year-old, from Kirby-in-Ashfield, was killed on 7, May, 2009.

Gary Thompson was a senior aircraftman with the Royal Auxiliary Air Force Regiment. The 51-year-old from Nottingham was killed in an explosion while on patrol in Kandahar.

Craig Brelsford, was a sergeant from Nottingham in the Mercian Regiment. In September 2007, he was shot during a firefight trying to rescue wounded colleagues after falling behind enemy lines in Garmsir, Helmand. He was 25.

Twenty-three-year old Damian Wright came from Mansfield. In September 2007 he was one of two killed during fighting with the Taliban at Lashkar Gah, Helmand.

In June 2007, L/Cpl Paul Sandford was shot while on patrol with his company clearing a Taliban compound in Upper Gereshk Valley, Helmand. The 23-year-old was from Nottingham.

Steven Johnson, from Collingham, was a flight lieutenant with 120 Squadron. The 38-year-old was one of 14 British personnel killed when a Nimrod MR2 aircraft crashed in Kandahar on 2 September, 2006. A fuel leak was thought to be responsible for the crash.

Private Andrew Cutts, from Mansfield, died as a result of 'friendly fire' in January, 2008, at Musa Qala in Helmand. He was 19.

Casualties in Iraq

Leading aircraftman Martin Beard was a member of RAF Regiment, 1 Squadron. The 20-year-old from Mansfield was shot while on foot patrol in the al-Waki district of Basra.

Sgt Wayne Rees, from Worksop, was killed in an accident in a Scimitar Armoured Fighting Vehicle in Maysan. He was 36.
