Snowdonia robots and architecture

Flooded quarry
Hi-tech robots are surveying the historic Vivian Quarry, Llanberis

Hidden Histories on BBC2 Wales reveals the robots working at the foot of Snowdon surveying a disused quarry.

Hi-tech meets history as the most detailed survey ever undertaken into the historic Vivian Quarry, Llanberis, is well underway.

Using specially designed robots and laser scanning technology, they gain astonishing never-seen-before 3D views of the quarry.

Also featured on the programme is the architect Herbert North who lived in Llanfairfechan and was arguably the first to bring an individual Welsh style to architecture.

Inspired by traditional architecture styles in north Wales and the Arts and Crafts movement, he spread his artistic flair on the houses and buildings across Snowdonia.

His unconventional and often quirky approach is still evident in the designs of the houses and chapels across the landscape today, as architect Adam Voelker demonstrates when he looks into his legacy and distinctive style.

Meanwhile Deena Groom from The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales looks at aerial photographs taken over Fishguard on the Pembrokeshire Coast.

They reveal a fishtrap which has been hidden for over 60 years.

Deena looks into the dramatic changes to the sea level of the fishtrap, offering an amazing glimpse into the impact of climate change on coastal archaeology around Wales today.

Harlech has many buildings which have stood the test of time, but one well known landmark will soon disappear.

The sixties tower block at Coleg Harlech is to be demolished, but a huge work by one of Wales' most celebrated artists, Jonah Jones, is part of the fabric of the building.

The complex design of the sculpture, made from over 800 pieces of Sicilian marble and Welsh slate, is full of hidden symbolism. But is there any way of preserving the sculpture for future generations to admire?
