TV career blossoms in Llandudno

Llandudno-based Blodau is Rhian Blythe's biggest TV role to date

Award-winning actress Rhian Blythe from Caernarfon takes her first lead TV role in a new drama set in Llandudno.

Blodau (Flowers) was filmed on location in a shop on Upper Mostyn Street in May.

The principal character Lili is played by 27-year-old Rhian from Llandwrog, near Caernarfon.

"Up to now, I've worked mainly in the theatre," said Rhian, who won the Best Actress award at last year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The prize was for her role in the Sherman Cymru production of Deep Cut, a play about the deaths of four young soldiers at the army barracks of that name, written by Philip Ralph.

Rhian has done TV work before though, she explained.

"I've worked on [S4C] series such as Talcen Caled and Man Del, but what has been great about this production is that I've been on set practically every day, so I feel part of everything, and have got to know every member of the cast and crew.

"I relaxed as the filming went on, more than I've ever done on any production, and that's a good thing."

The series follows Lili and her friend Cat (Sara Lloyd Gregory) as they venture into the world of floral design.

Cat is the business head, while Lili is responsible for creating fantastic floral arrangements.

This is a completely new world for Rhian, but she's been greatly inspired by the work of the series flower expert, Sioned Rowlands.

Sioned, from Bodfari in Denbighshire, was runner up earlier this year in the Florist of the Year competition. She presents items on S4C's gardening lifestyle series, Byw yn yr Ardd, runs her own wedding floral design company and also lectures at Northop Horticultural College.

"I've enjoyed working on Blodau very much," says Sioned. "It's been hard work. The main problem was keeping the flowers fresh during filming. Flowers wilt, of course, and sometimes we had to rush out to buy some new flowers. The local florist shops have been a great help."

Rhian adds: "Sioned is great. She does all the work and, as Lili, I get all the praise."

Blodau, Sunday, 8 November, 9pm, S4C.
