Felin Uchaf volunteers in three-day barn-raising

Volunteers and experts have joined together to raise the frame of a traditional barn over the course of three days at a cultural and environmental community centre on the Llyn Peninsula.

The five crafted oak cruck frames were raised up and placed in position at Felin Uchaf, Rhoshirwaun, using traditional pulleys and ropes.

Volunteer training officer Phillipa Owen said they achieved their aim of finishing the framework in three days, with about 25 people each day.

"On the last day there were about 20 people out there, eight o'clock at night at about -5 degrees C, and I was getting everybody dancing just to try and keep our feet warm," Phillipa said.

All the timber is locally sourced and has been crafted by volunteers at Felin Uchaf, under the guidance of project manager Dafydd Davies-Hughes.

The oak frames stand on slate-walled foundations with under-floor heating. A temporary roof will go up first and then the barn will be thatched in the summer.

"We've got some traditional boatbuilding courses and other craft courses lined up to hold in there," Phillipa explained.

This is the first phase of what will eventually be a T-shaped barn, with sections rented out to local craftspeople.

Tilhill Economic Forestry and Mantell Gwynedd’s Galluogi Gwynedd Fund helped get the barn project off the ground.

Volunteers at Felin Uchaf can get involved in gardening and horticultural activities, as well as eco-building.
