The 750ft pier has suffered several fires in its history, with new buildings put up each time.

But there's no doubt the pier has played a big part in the town's life. It was a regular venue for pop concerts at one time.

The Grade II listed structure has been a popular spot for anglers, as well as people just taking in the view.

However, the cost of maintaining the pier has resulted in much debate over its future and the role of public bodies, as well as private individuals.

The most recent owner, Steve Hunt, bought the the pier in 2003 and started to restore it, but was later declared bankrupt.
