Flintshire's new 'electrobanks' allow people to recycle small electrical items

Flintshire residents can now take their unwanted small electrical items to an "electrobank".

Discarded items, such as toasters and kettles, will then be recycled rather than sent to landfill.

Flintshire council, working with environmental company Strateco, are piloting the scheme at three locations in the county.

David Burton from Strateco said: "It looks like the response from the public has been phenomenal."

The "electrobanks" are located at three supermarkets around the county.

Household items such as toasters and kettles as well as mobile phones and computers can be taken to the new banks.

Home computers will have any data stored on them securely removed before being re-used where possible.

Over the years, enthusiasm for recycling has grown, said Mr Burton.

"Recycling banks have become part of street furniture," he said.

Flintshire councillor Nancy Matthews, executive member for waste management, said she was pleased the county was taking part.

"The more we recycle the less goes to landfill," she said. "And the more we recycle the better for the planet."

The "electrobank"s are at Tesco in Mold and Holywell and at Broughton retail park.
