Community groups across north east Wales have cleaned up in an awards ceremony for reclaiming areas covered in tonnes of rubbish.

Eco Watch Rangers, comprising 300 young people working with Flintshire Neighbourhood Watch, were the overall winners in the Keep Wales Tidy.

They've removed 500 bags of rubbish and 150 bags of recyclable waste in the county since being set up last year.

Among the other winners announced at a special ceremony in Llandudno today, Moss Valley Angling Club from Wrexham won an award for long term effort.

Formed six years ago, the ceremony was told they've worked tirelessly to restore a no-go area around their fishing club.

Initially, they removed 17 tonnes of litter and waste and still carry out regular litter picks.

Another award went to the so-called Rhyl West EVA 'Action Day in Prince's Street' for clearing more than 45 tons of litter and general waste in May.

A Keep Wales Tidy spokesperson said: "The street stood out as having a large number of issues stemming from crime and related environmental issues that were affecting residents."

So a day of action was planned involving eight partners, including Clwyd Alyn Housing Association and Rhyl Police, as well as local residents.

In the river improvement category, the runners up were Bradley Fishing Club, Wrexham.

And Mold Spring Clean group were runners up in an award for team effort, bringing together different organisations, businesses and community groups to host an annual litter pick.
