Where are you from originally, and where are you now?

Originally from south Yorkshire, I lived in south Wales, then 19 years in Snowdonia before moving to Mold.

How did you get started as an artist?

Always drawn and painted and after a degree in business in Cardiff, studied fine art in Sheffield. Two years as a teacher then a 30 year career in housing design and construction. Left my 'day job' as chief executive of North Wales Housing Association in 2000 and have been a full time painter since.

What medium/media do you work in?

I have used all kinds but recent work includes acrylic, inks and natural dyes.

How would you describe your work?

I am told my work is vibrant and energetic; certainly my response to the environment has been physical and emotional and the work is always colourful.

What are your influences and inspirations? Do you draw inspiration from your local area?

I have run and walked most of the mountains and hills of north Wales and so am influenced by the Welsh landscape. The nearby urban centres of Chester, Manchester and my home city of Sheffield help influence my figure work as does my interest in genealogy.

My artwork, however, does not relate to 'recognisable' places but endeavours to express essential dramatic and lyrical features in the search, through 'figure-scapes', for the rhythm of land and figure.

Where has your work been shown?

Throughout the UK. Apart from local shows, I exhibit my work at major art fairs, such as Manchester, Sheffield, Chelsea and Windsor.

What are your views on the current scene nationally and locally?

'Sensationalism' still rules the national scene, however, there are many sincere artists who produce consistently good work that deserve a mention (some are on this site).

Anything else we should know?

From time to time I hold an 'Open Studio' and those interested can contact me through my website.
