The most northerly Sport Relief mile in Britain took place on the island of Unst, Shetland on Sunday 21 March.

Unst is Britain's northernmost isle with a population of 500. The good spring weather encouraged over 200 of the island's inhabitants to take part in or support the Sport Relief Mile at the weekend.

The turnout of people at the event included pupils, parents and teachers from the school, members of the community, the local firemen, coastguards, football and netball teams and the Uyeasound Jarl Squad, with everyone wearing their respective outfits or in fancy dress.

Organiser of the event, Caroline Massie, PE Teacher at Baltasound Junior High School, said: "It originally was just going to be pupils, parents and staff at the school but we soon realised that it could be a great community event, with the school at the centre of it all."

People of all ages took part in the one, three and six mile challenges, with the youngest participant only weeks old and the oldest over 70 years old.

Jane Macaulay and Desley Stickle completed the one mile challenge on stilts and George Rodger was the fastest runner in the six mile challenge.

The community raised £1070.62 for Sport Relief with the participants enjoying some well-earned refreshments at the school after the event.

Caroline continued: "It was absolutely fantastic to see how the whole community can get together to support the school and the Sport Relief cause. All in all, a great day!"
