Maths helps a girl out of a coma
Vicki Alex with her family.
Vicki was diagnosed with leukaemia in September

When Vicki Alex was placed under a medically induced coma, no one was sure if she would regain consciousness.

Then Nick, her father, decided to ask her maths questions and was surprised when she started to respond.

"I know she likes maths so I just started asking her questions and she gave responses," he said.

Vicki is battling with Acute myeloid leukaemia, which reduces the production of normal blood cells in the bone marrow.

Doctors put her in a coma in the hope that her body would have a better chance of fighting the disease.

Vicki's Story

Nick Alex, an IT specialist from Finedon decided to write a blog online to help his family process what was going on.

"In the beginning you've got all of theses feelings and you don't really know how to deal with the situation."

The blog has helped the Alex family to gain support, share information about treatment and express day to day thoughts.

"I've had quite a few people who've gone through a similar experience leave comments on the blog or email me so it's been fantastic."

Vicki, who is 15-years-old, is slowly recovering but still needs a bit of treatment which requires her spending quite a lot of time in hospital.

The family are pleased that Vicky has been able come home for a few days and to familiar surroundings in between treatments.

Nick is continuing to write the blog as Vicki continues the treatment.
