Springwatch 2010: Red-backed shrike spotted

The virtually extinct red-backed shrike was spotted by a BBC Springwatch cameraman at Cley in north Norfolk on Thursday, 27 May 2010.

They were once a familiar sight in the UK, but the predator is now very rarely seen on our shores.

The creature has been dubbed the "butcher bird" as it often impales its prey of beetles, lizards, bees and other insects on thorns or brambles.

The birds have a distinctive black mask marking across their eyes.
