City jungle fails to swing prize

It has taken John Kelf 12 years to build the garden

A Norwich man has missed out on clinching the BBC Gardener's World Gardener of the Year 2009 competition.

Jon Kelf has come fourth in the contest after making it through to the finals with his jungle-inspired garden.

The tropical plot sits behinds his semi-detached house and is filled with more than 200 exotic blooms over five levels of decking.

The garden has taken 12 years to mature, and the result was announced on the BBC Two show on Friday, 23 October.

Jon's has been gardening since he was six years old and was inspired to create a tropical paradise after travelling to far-flung destinations.

Although he's missed out on the BBC prize, his unusual back yard has been voted Best Garden of the Year by Daily Mail readers.
