Bill Makin: The man who created Pensthorpe

Pensthorpe Nature Reserve in north Norfolk is now a haven for wildlife, but it was once just rolling farmland.

Former landowner Bill Makin worked tirelessly for 50 years to transform the area before selling up in 2003.

More than one million tonnes of gravel and aggregate was removed from the area, which helped create much of the reserve visitors enjoy today.

Pensthorpe was thrust into the TV spotlight as hosts to the prime time BBC wildlife series Springwatch.
