The Kabeedies release debut album

The Kabeedies hope their first album will catapult their careers skywards

Norfolk band The Kabeedies are releasing their debut album, Rumpus, on Monday, 9 November, 2009, after a summer of gigs and successful singles.

Their first album release follows a year spent supporting established acts and coming up with new material.

"We've been constantly touring and writing," said Francis 'Fab' Bell, the band's drummer.

The group hope the release of Rumpus will take them a step closer to achieving mainstream success.

The Kabeedies' climb up the music business ladder has already seen them play support tours with mainstream electro-pop band Cansei De Ser Sexy (CSS) and, more recently, Lo-Fi Culture Scene in July 2009.

"Playing to 800 people every day on the CSS tour was a wonderful experience," said Fab.

"Going back to our own headline tours was humbling, but we noticed a gathering support which was really encouraging to see," he added.

Rewarded

In late 2009, their hard work was rewarded when they were signed by 13 Artists, a major booking agent, a move which they hope will introduce their music to a wider audience.

"After we partnered up with our booking agent, we shared a headline tour with Lo-Fi Culture Scene," said Fab.

"It felt like we were in it together. It's a nice feeling of camaraderie," he added.

BBC Norfolk Introducing has supported the band since they first burst onto the scene after forming in 2006.

In January 2008, they were invited through the BBC Radio Norfolk show to do a session at the renowned Maida Vale studios for BBC Radio 1's Huw Stephens.

They also played well received sets at Latitude and Glastonbury festivals in 2008 courtesy of BBC Introducing and have reported on the Norfolk music scene for BBC Radio 1.

The band followed up on this success in summer 2009 with several festivals including Kendal Calling and Dockville in Germany.

"It was unbelievable. The crowd were nuts, we played three encores and the tech guys didn't want us to leave the stage," said Fab.

Good reception

In 2009 they released singles to good reception, including Little Brains, which came out in April and which they filmed a video for with Lambda Films.

"It was a blast, and filmed in my house," said Fab.

But it is the release of their debut album on Monday, 9 November, 2009 that marks a step-up in their musical career.

Titled Rumpus, it showcases their familiar happy-clappy sound as well as premiering some new tracks.

"It's the product of three years' hard work from us and everyone around us who has helped," said Fab.

"We feel that it represents us as a whole and expresses exactly what we're about. There are piles of angst, and then patches of considered maturity that we've not really included before.

"It's not the bratty-punk that we used to play because we've grown as people - but we've kept the core element of fun and simple-mindedness."

New single

A new single, Petit Filous, is also being released.

"We thought that it was appropriate that we draw a line under older Kabeedies tunes and make a final push with the likes of Petits Filous," said Fab.

"It's a big sounding song, and we wanted to really start the album with a bang.

"The next songs we write and release will be a departure from this kind of thing."

Despite a rollercoaster year, the band are aware that they are now entering the most important period of their existence so far.

"You only get one debut album, and only one chance to show your home fans what you can really do," said Fab.

The Kabeedies will be on BBC Norfolk Introducing on Friday, 6 November, 2009 and will be available on the BBC iPlayer for one week.
