BBC Radio One plays Mushnocandy

Mushnocandy is breaking out of Norfolk and into the big time

Joe James, a 16-year-old electro-head from Fakenham, has broken on a national scale after his act was played on BBC Radio One Introducing.

BBC Radio One liked what they heard from the artist and DJ Huw Stephens broadcasted the track 'I'm a Teenager, I want to Rave' to a national audience.

"A couple of times I did find myself hopping around my room in excitement when my name was read out," said Joe.

The experimentalist is looking forward to touring his material around the UK.

Mushnocandy has appeared out of nowhere to produce original, in-your-face, computer-techno with a scalding vocal sound.

It all started when he was just 12 years old.

"I started messing about, experimenting with my sound," said Joe.

"The best way I can describe it is a combination of greasy electro-house with insanely pointless shouting and pig squealing, going to the extreme to shock and concern one's eardrums," he added.

Creating a Mushnocandy aura requires time and dedication, but Joe finds the experience rewarding.

"Depending on my mood and the time I have to waste, I spend around two or three hours at a time making sounds on my computer, maybe more if I come up with something good," he said.

Joe studies a diploma in Art and Design at the College Of West Anglia in King's Lynn and it has inspired how he works, both musically and lyrically.

Joe couldn't believe it when his track was played on BBC Radio One

"Lyrics always seem to take less time as I come up with them mostly on the spot - it makes the song sound so much more of a catastrophe," he said.

"My mother does worry at some of the sounds that blare out when I'm recording upstairs - the fact that I'm a horror fanatic and study art definitely inspires me.

"I'm planning on coming out of the darkness a bit though... after the success of 'Im A Teenager', the possibilities are endless."

Mushnocandy was first discovered by BBC Norfolk Introducing, where his tracks received regular air-play on BBC Radio Norfolk.

Being played on BBC Radio One has now become the definitive highlight of the Mushnocandy experience, which Joe describes as "One of the weirdest feelings I've ever had".

With the ongoing success of his music and balancing his main passion with college, Joe is kept very busy.

"It is one of the busiest years of my life. College couldn't really take any more of my time if it wanted to, but everything is really falling into place," he said.

In one of his first Mushnocandy expeditions outside of Norfolk, Joe is ready to take on the length and breadth of the UK - even appearing in some of those, less obvious places.

"I'm going up to Cumbria for a live show - that'll be… a trek... but rather interesting and I can't wait!" he said.
