The Hidden Parent

Yvonne Arden from Oldham with her daughter Debra. Why don't you share the story of your life?

Yvonne Arden was 'frightened to death' on her first day at work. She 'couldn't see a thing' at her wedding. And she'd like to be buried in a wicker basket.

How often have you heard someone say: "I wish I'd asked my dad about his childhood," or "I wonder if he was happy?" or "How did mum feel on her wedding day?"

The Hidden Parent is a BBC Radio Manchester campaign aimed at encouraging us to talk to our mums and dads and to ask all those questions now before it's too late.

When Yvonne Arden, 62, from Oldham sat down with her daughter Debra for a heart-to-heart over the family album, some surprising things emerged.

Yvonne announced: "I want a funeral that's raucous and people go away crying with laughter rather than grief. And I'd like to be buried in a wicker basket because I think they look cool!"

And we're looking for more volunteers to share their stories - like Yvonne.

Suggested questions

  • Did you have a happy childhood?
  • What was your earliest memory?
  • Who was you best friend at school?
  • Who was your first love?
  • When did you first meet mum/dad?
  • How did you feel on your first day at work?
  • What is the toughest thing you've had to face?
  • What do you think is your best talent?
  • What was your biggest regret?
  • How do you want us to celebrate your life?

Taking part

BBC Radio Manchester is looking for more people who would be willing to record some of those family chats.

And if you're chosen, we'll give you a CD of that conversation as a permanent record for your family archives.

If you're 18+ and you and a parent would like to take part, please email radiomanchester@bbc.co.uk or ring us on 0161 228 2255.

Listen to all the 'Hidden Parent' stories on BBC Radio Manchester with Heather Stott weekdays from 9am, Monday 20 July.
