Table's Songs You Can Sing

Dave O'Dowda, frontman of Manchester modern folk six-piece Table, has described his band's latest video as "perfect".

The promo for Songs You Can Sing was directed by Table guitarist Keiran Flynn and Dave says he is sure that is why it is so good.

"Having him do the video was great, as he knows the song better than anyone… except me of course."

The film accompanies Table's debut single, which is out on Static Caravan.

It's no surprise Dave is impressed with it, as it is a stunning piece of work.

In fact, he admits that it is so good that, when he first saw it, he was worried it would actually detract from the song.

"When I watched it, I was really worried that it would take away from the song.

"It's so important for a video to complement a song, rather than overpower it, and this does it for me.

"I think the colours are perfect. Keiran has kept the pace slow, which is perfect. It gives time for the song to breath.

"I think he has captured the mood of the song very well, specifically his attention to space and simplicity.

"It's a pretty dark song with a very reflective mood and I reckon that the mood is strengthened by the shot choices."

The video centres around a very simple concept, one of a man tied to a chair, and Dave says this is something the pair decided upon almost instantly.

"Immediately it made sense. We discussed various ideas and always came back to that one.

"The importance was focusing on simple ideas and doing them well."

That idea of simplicity and darkness is something that Dave explains comes from the tune itself and, while he says it is a "song about many things", he admits one theme does shine through.

"Mainly [it's about] my frustration with people who don't take the time to stop and reflect on what is going on around them.

"When I wrote it, I was surrounded with negative people who had no reason to be moaning so much.

"A lot of people get hurt without even realising it's happening - hence [the line] 'tear a blind hole'."

Turning hurt into the kind of beauty exhibited in both the song and the video is a rare talent and one that Dave, Keiran and the rest of Table deserve to be noticed for.
