The Shard skyscraper at London Bridge will be the tallest building in the European Union when it is completed in 2012.

The tower, at London Bridge in Southwark, will reach 306 m (1,003ft) and accommodate a hotel, restaurants, apartments and office space.

It has been designed by Renzo Piano, an Italian architect, who is best known for creating Paris's Pompidou Centre of modern art with Britain's Richard Rogers.

Sonja Jessup has been to take a look.
