Step Up 2010

Do you have a passion for news? Do you want to be at the heart of investigating original local stories about the build up to the Olympics 2012 for BBC London? Is your dream to be a journalist, but you always thought the BBC wasn't for you? Have you struggled to get your foot in the door? Here is your chance to meet and learn from BBC staff, experience how the BBC London newsroom works, and get an insight into how a news programme is put together. By taking part in Step Up you will develop your confidence and knowledge, and be in a better position to apply for jobs within the media industry.

What is Step Up?

Step Up is a media project run by the BBC Academy in partnership with BBC London which aims to give people the skills and confidence to work in news.

If you are successful you will get the chance to learn production skills in TV, Radio or Online over a period of 12 weeks. The final project will put your new expertise and creativity into practice by producing stimulating content on emerging stories about the 2012 Olympics for BBC London. You will also be paired with a BBC mentor, who will give you one-to-one support and advice.

Unfortunately, we can't give you a job at the end of the project, but we hope the skills we have taught you will help you on the way to a successful media career.

What is the Background to Step Up?

STEP UP
Step Up mentees at work during 2009
BBC London have been involved with Step Up since 2007.
Previous project work has been broadcast on both radio and tv and published online.

Over the last three years BBC London and the BBC Academy worked together to provide a fantastic opportunity to people across our vibrant and exciting capital. Past trainees have created radio reports, online pages, audio and video slideshows and filmed and edited television reports.

Before the partnership with BBC London the project was run successfully in West London since 1990, allowing individuals to get a more in-depth knowledge of radio, online and TV, and general experience of working within the BBC.

What are the aims of the training scheme?

We gave people from local London communities access to the BBC and its staff so that they could leave with a greater knowledge, understanding and experience of the media industry.

The project is NOT aimed at creating jobs or providing work experience.

We aim to:

  • raise awareness of the broadcasting industry
  • increase knowledge of, and provide experience in radio, new media and TV
  • provide support to individuals by matching each mentee with a BBC mentor
  • give the participants experience of working within a large organisation
  • increase the self-confidence of participants
  • encourage a positive attitude towards development

More information about Step Up is available on the online application forms.
