Residents turn flats into art

Art on flats in Hackney

A housing estate has been turned into a work of art by two of the people who live there.

Blocks of flats on the Haggerston Estate in Hackney are due to be demolished within two years and replaced with new homes by the housing association London and Quadrant.

But instead of leaving the flat which is already empty, left boarded up, artists Lasse Johannson and Andrea Luka Zimmerman decided to cover their windows with art.

But this is no ordinary art, it is a portrait of photographs of people who have lived and still live there.

The artists have not decided whether the photos will be destroyed with the buildings or if they will be displayed elsewhere when the flats have gone.
