In Pictures: Open House London
Some of the capital's most iconic buildings will offer free admission to visitors during Open House weekend on 19 and 20 September 2009.
This year's celebration will see over 700 architectural activities take place across 31 different boroughs.
Buildings old and new will be throwing open the door for talks and tours, visits and debates and, in some cases, direct access to the teams that design, construct and regenerate London.
In Greenwich for instance participating venues will include Inigo Jones' Queen's House, the Old Royal Military Academy, Greenwich Yacht Club, Severndroog Castle and the Fan Museum.
Little Green Street in Kentish Town will also be open. It inspired The Kinks' 1966 song Dead End Street and at only 2.5m wide is one of the few intact Georgian streets in London.
Shoreditch Prototype House is on the Open House list, too. With its innovative planted facade, this is a state-of-the-art building, developed as a prototype for eco-friendly urban terraced housing of the future.
A green focus also informs Cremorne Riverside Centre on the north bank of the Thames overlooking Battersea. This architect-designed canoeing facility for children and young people has a 'brown' roof that provides a habitat for spiders and other insects.
Places of worship are a feature of Open House London as are children's centres, museums and architects' studios. New additions include Jimi Hendrix's flat at 23 Brook Street W1 and a cycle tour highlighting the best architecture in Peckham.
