Accounts of a century of worship

Liverpool Cathedral's Lady Chapel under construction

The Lady Chapel at Liverpool Cathedral is marking it's centenary with a range of events.

The chapel was the first part of the cathedral to be completed and was consecrated on St Peters Day in 1910.

Liverpool Cathedral is creating an exhibition of the history of the chapel to open in June 2010, and is appealing for memories and archive material.

With a fifteenth century statue and portrait windows the chapel is noted for its elaborate design.

Organisers of the centenary events are looking for testimonies, artefacts, pictures, drawings and personal accounts of the chapel - including any relating to its construction.

Anyone who has something they think may be suitable for the exhibition can contact Cathedral Archivist, Val Jackson by email val.jackson@liverpoolcathedral.org.uk or on 0151 702 7227.

The construction and design of the Lady Chapel was heavily influenced by George Bodley who worked alongside the cathedral's architect Giles Gilbert Scott.

Bodley had been one of the assessors of the competition for the cathedral's design and the Lady Chapel shows his leaning to more elaborate design.

After Bodley's death in 1907 Gilbert Scott was free to continue the rest of the cathedral in the gothic design he favoured.

The exhibition will run from 21 June to 8 July, 2010.
