Liverpool Cathedral will be opening the Vestry Tower on selected
|
The tower of Liverpool Cathedral, with its panoramic views across the city, is to open for night time viewing for the first time. The new opening hours will give visitors the chance to see the city lit up after dark from 331ft high. With funding from the North West Development Agency, lighting has been installed at the top of the cathedral, to allow late access. The tower will be open on selected days in October and November. Liverpool Cathedral was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and took 74 years to build, finally being completed in 1978. The Vestey Tower of the cathedral is one of the highest points in the city with views northwards to the Mersey coastline and out to Liverpool Bay, across Wirral to the hills of north Wales and in the east towards the Pennines. The ascent to the cathedral tower passes through the bell tower and the heaviest ringing peal of church bells in the world, including the centre bell Great George, which weighs 14.7 tonnes and is only rung on special occasions. The tower is open from 1200-2000 on 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 October and 12, 19, 26 November, 2009. For ticket prices and details visit
