Mother's support for Brown letter

Jean Wright explains why she supports Gordon Brown's letter writing

A Merseyside mother has spoken of her support for Gordon Brown's habit of writing letters to bereaved families.

The Prime Minister has been criticised for misspellings in a note sent to Jacqui Janes, whose son died in Afghanistan.

Jean Wright, whose son died as a baby, received a hand written response to a card she sent to the Prime Minister's wife after their daughters death.

She says Mrs Janes should see the sympathy behind Mr Brown's letter.

"The baby I had only lived eight hours, a little boy," Jean from Lydiate, told BBC North West Tonight.

"In the letter I explained about my baby and that I knew how she felt, and that I hoped everything would be alright."

Gordon and Sarah Brown's daughter Jennifer Jane died in 2002 after being born prematurely.

Mr Brown sent a card in reply to Jean Wright's letter, including in his own hand, remarks about her own loss.

"I felt really sympathetic towards him because he came down to our level to write and say how sorry he was," Jean recalls.

"There are not many people, especially in government, that would do a thing like that."
