Remembering Capt Daniel Shepherd
Captain Daniel Shepherd
Captain Daniel Shepherd was killed in Helmand in July

Captain Daniel Shepherd, 28, a bomb disposal expert from Lincoln, was killed while trying to defuse a homemade bomb in Helmand on 20 July 2009.

Capt Shepherd served with the Joint Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group and had previously dealt with more than 50 devices while in Afghanistan.

Since then the family have been coming to terms with their loss.

They have organised events to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity.

During his funeral, Lt Col Gareth Bex told mourners that Capt Shepherd had served his country with distinction and was a 'human dynamo'.

Lt Col Bex told mourners: "It is not an overstatement to say that Dan was a hero.

"Well aware of the dangers, he faced them knowing that the safety of others depended on his actions, a responsibility he felt privileged to accept.

"He was a wonderful man and his memory will live on with us."

The MoD said Capt Shepherd had been due to take up a 'high profile appointment' at the Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood tackling the thread of improvised explosive devices.

Remembrance Sunday is a day to reflect on those who've lost their lives or been injured in conflicts and a day to say thank you to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
