Former Labour MP Tony Benn has officially opened Speakers' Corner in Lincoln
Veteran politician Tony Benn has officially opened Speakers' Corner in Lincoln.
The former Labour MP cut the ribbon and talked about some of his personal highlights from the original Speakers' Corner in London's Hyde Park.
Mr Benn, who is the current president of the Stop The War coalition, was followed by students from the University of Lincoln who were among the first people to debate at the site in the city's Cornhill.
Two potential sites in the Cornhill were tested to find out where the speaker could be best heard
The Speakers' Corner is a joint project between the University of Lincoln's Take Part programme and the Speakers' Corner Trust.
Complete with its own street sign, the Speakers' Corner is sited close to where a suffragette demonstration took place nearly a century ago.
Spokesman for the trust, Richard Dale, said: "It is an appropriate site for people to exercise their right to freedom of speech."
