In pictures: My trip back to India

Co-founder of the Rushey Mead Foundation, Bhasker Solanki, makes a returning journey back to an earthquake hit area in India with students and teachers from Leicester. Each member of the group was presented with a garland made by the Indian students.

Leicester group with a group from Gujarat

The foundation opened Rushey Mead School in Gujarat in 2004 following the devastating earthquake in January 2001 in Bhuj, Gujarat. Bhasker was pleased to know that some of the girls from the school, who passed last year, have gone into further education.

Bhasker believes it is important for young people in Leicester to learn what life is like in parts of India. Here Ravi Kataria from Rushey Mead School in Leicester is teaching maths at the Rushey Mead School in India.

Leicester teachers helping students in India on their visit

The Leicester group spent two weeks in India. Staff from the Rushey Mead School in Leicester got an insight in to the education system at the school in India while helping the students with their computer work.

The school is built in the village of Nagor, which is only a 20 minute drive from Bhuj and is funded entirely on donations from the UK. Here the Leicester sports teacher Ritesh Bardolia takes a lesson with active students from the school in Gujarat.

Many communities in India use cows to help them to make their everyday lives a little easier. It is a common site to see the cows on the roads.

Indigenous Indians, who are also known as the tribal people, mostly still live in small remote villages. They tend to farm on small plots and mostly survive without running water or electricity.

Independance Day celebrations in Gujarat

Soldiers lined up for the Independence Day celebrations in the town of Rajpippla.

The celebrations were colourful and included a lot of dances by what are known as the tribal people.

The event took place in a large field with a crowd of thousands including the group from Leicester.

Micheal has lived in the forest for the past 29 years. He designs gadgets, which would be useful to the tribal people in the area. Here he stands with his solar stove which can bake a cake.

This school in Bonand villlage has a shortage of notebooks. The trip to India was an eye-opener for the Leicester teachers and pupils.

Some of the children come to school in order to get a meal.
