Sing Christmas 2009 at Leicester Highcross

On Monday 21 December 2009 hundreds of people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland joined the region's big sing-along, Sing Christmas 2009, with BBC Leicester. The service was broadcast live at 19:00 by BBC Radio Leicester (104.9FM, DAB & Online).

Sing Christmas is a community carol service with live music, well-known carols, special guests and a unique interactive element to experience. The host venue was St Peter's Square at Highcross Shopping Centre in Leicester.

Other venues across the city and county included local pubs, clubs, community centres, care homes and churches helped the venues take part. BBC Leicester even attracted a group of friends and families from France... Yes France!

Young people taking part in Sing Christmas 2009

Around 100 venues across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland joined in with Sing Christmas 2009. Many people, young and old, got into the festive spirit. "A great time. Singing and fun helped to lift the spirits."

Music by the South Wigston Salvation Army Band - Sing Christmas 2009

The host for Sing Christmas 2009 was Sandra Herbert and music came from the Rainbows Hospice Staff Choir and the South Wigston Salvation Army Band.

Special guests included Lady Jennifer Gretton, Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Rev Dianne Tidball of the East Midlands Baptist Association and children from Orchard Primary School in Broughton Astley.

Julian White of Leicester Tigers and England read part of the Christmas story in the Sing Christmas 2009 broadcast. The Lord Mayor and Mayoress of Leicester and the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council also joined the sing-along at the Highcross.

Being part of Sing Christmas 2009 at the host venue had an added bonus - people got a traditional treat... mince pies, crackers and drinking a toast. And untraditional treats were not far away either - hot donuts and candy floss... yum!

The 'Song Sheet' was available to download so everyone could sing-along with the live broadcast with BBC Leicester.

There were 12 popular carols - 50% more than 2008. These included Silent Night, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, O Come All Ye Faithful, Mary's Boy Child, Away in a Manger and O Little Town of Bethlehem.
