Couple to pedalo on 240 mile trip of Grand Union Canal

A couple from Leicestershire are raising money for soldiers' charity by attempting to navigate a pedalo along 240 miles of the Grand Union Canal.

Dave Leadingham estimates it will take him and girlfriend Julia three weeks to make the round trip between Oxford and Foxton on the small pedal-powered boat.

Travelling at 4 mph, it will hold the two adventurers plus a tent and food.

The pair were inspired to fundraise for Support Our Soldiers after meeting the families of men killed in Afghanistan.

Dave, an ex-soldier with the 9th/12th Lancers, wants more people to acknowledge the work of soldiers on the front line.

"I think troops out there doing their bit are just taken for granted a little bit, so any awareness is good awareness."

Originally the couple had planned to travel in a barge, however after failing to find a suitable vessel they were offered the pedalo by Leicester charity Cyclemagic.

Although hopeful of success, the pair are not putting too much pressure on themselves to stick to a deadline.

"If things go wrong and we don't make it, then we've given it our best shot. We're just going to take each day as it comes."
