Leicester social enterprise 2Funky Arts are providing DJ workshops over the summer holidays for people of all ages.

The project is being supported by social housing company Riverside and has been aimed at areas of the city where their tenants live.

The course aims to engage with young people in these areas, provide them with some useful skills and to reduce anti-social behaviour.

Leicester born DJ Kid J will be sharing his knowledge of the music industry.

He has been DJing professionally for the past nine years in Leicester and across the UK.

"I left my job as an engineer to pursue a career as a DJ and haven't looked back since.

"I have been doing workshops for the past four years; it's interesting going out and meeting new people to pass on my skills."

Creating opportunity

The Riverside Community Chest Fund is a scheme which offers a grant between £50 and £2000 to organisations, community groups and resident groups that help to support their local residents.

2Funky were granted £2000 towards their DJ summer workshop after approaching Riverside.

While being a great summer activity for any one who has a passion for DJing and music, both 2Funky Arts and Riverside's aim is to create opportunities and sustainable initiatives for the young people across the communities in Leicestershire.

The initiatives that have been supported include creating job opportunities, neighbourhood communities, sport and recreational activities.

Rupa Chandarana, Community Projects Coordinator from Riverside, said, "This is at the heart of our vision of transforming lives and revitalising neighbourhoods."

"Each young person who attends the workshop will gain some invaluable skills to take away with them and will receive a certificate of attendance for their career portfolio"

Riverside have also funded the recent project running at New Parks, Leicester with Streetvibe.

The City DJ workshop will be running on Monday, Wednesday and Friday the weeks beginning of 9 and 16 August 2010 starting from 10:00 BST at the Base on Belgrave Gate, Leicester.
