Flying over the East Midlands' M1

November 2009 marks the M1's official 50th birthday.

In 1959, Britain had never seen anything like it - six lanes wide and almost 60 miles long. The M1 was a sign of things to come.

However, it took a few more years for the motorway to slice its way through the East Midlands.

BBC Inside Out's Marie Ashby took a helicopter journey right across the region - from Junction 20 in South Leicestershire, through Nottinghamshire, and right up to Junction 29a in North Derbyshire.

She hovers over local landmarks connected to the M1.

Watch the birds eye view of the surprisingly hip 1960's destination of Leicestershire Forest East Services; 'Nuthall Temple' in Nottinghamshire; a stately home built in 1757 and blown up to make way for the M1; the site of an unsolved motorway murder in Derbyshire and much more.
