A group of drama students from De Montfort University have been preparing to perform on the professional stage.

The 11 undergraduates will appear in two plays by contemporary British playwright Steven Berkoff at Curve theatre in Leicester during March 2011.

East, directed by Paul Kerryson, follows two gang members and their dysfunctional cockney family.

The second play, Greek is a humorous twist on the Oedipus legend reflected in 1980s London culture.

This is the first collaborative project between the university's drama students and the theatre, based in the city's Cultural Quarter.

Greek's director Adel Al-Salloum said: "Paul and I are privileged to be working with local emerging acting talent and offering them the opportunity to perform at Curve."

James Coldrick, who plays one of the lead parts in East, said although the rehearsal process has been intense he had really enjoyed gaining a new insight into the production of theatre.

"I haven't felt like a student swamped by professionals, because we have all been treated like professionals," said James.

"I love acting, and I hope to be a paid actor some day and this seems like the perfect opportunity to try and show my talent."
