One of the myriad of different seasonal images on show at Left Bank Leeds

Throughout Advent (the four weeks leading up to Christmas Day), Left Bank Leeds is hosting a festive exhibition.

The free public exhibition features the work of twenty-five artists and arts groups from Yorkshire and beyond.

This is the first public art exhibition to be held at Left Bank Leeds, a new music and exhibition space.

The new arts space is housed in the former St Margaret's Church on Cardigan Road.

Each exhibitor has created a piece exploring a different character, item or place from the traditional Advent story, such as Mary, Bethlehem and frankincense.

Curator, Si Smith, believes the exhibition will be a unique experience: "We've brought together a wide range of work, including painting, ceramics and installations. Our aim is to offer some refreshing perspectives on a familiar story, not to mention showing some beautiful art in a beautiful building!"

The show brings together a broad spectrum of contributors, from established artists, such as illustrator and comic book artist Simone Lia and Bradford-based artist Shaeron Caton-Rose.

Emerging talent like Michael Hannaford (a recent graduate of Leeds Metropolitan University) will also be showing his work and children from Burley St. Matthias' school have been working with a visiting artist to create a piece for the exhibition.

er St Margaret's Church in Burley
The Grade II listed former St Margaret's Church was designed by the architect Temple Moore in what has become known as "late gothic revival style".
Built by public subscription, it was completed in 1908 and used regularly until 1995 when the congregation merged with All Hallows and moved to their building.
The building was bought by a local Christian trust in 2002 and in September 2009 Left Bank Leeds hosted its first public event.

The exhibition will be open over the four weekends before Christmas, starting on Saturday 28 November 2009. A series of other events will run alongside the exhibition including a family Christingle Service, New Leads - a candlelit acoustic evening and a traditional carol service with the Heritage Singers and Masterworks Chorale.

Advent - an exhibition for the festive season, takes place at Left Bank Leeds (formerly St Margaret's Church), Cardigan Rd, Burley from Saturday 28 November until Sunday 20 December 2009.

The exhibition is open to the public on weekends only. Opening hours are from 11am - 4pm. Special arrangements can be made to open the exhibition to groups during the week. Contact them here.
