Andy commentated on the first match at The City of Manchester Stadium
|
We uncover the time Andy Bayes lost his cool commentating, who would be his dream sportsman's dinner date and the question he wished he'd never asked! Most memorable game? I have about three memorable games actually. I was lucky enough to commentate on the first ever match at The City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester City beat Barcelona 2-1. I commentated on Liverpool getting to the final of the Champions League last season, when they got through against Chelsea in the semis. The best atmosphere I've ever experienced at a football match. And on my final game with Century, Alan Shearer levelled the all time scoring record for Newcastle. The beat Mansfield in the FA Cup 1-0. Any commentating disasters? Erm...loads. My first game for BBC Radio Lancashire at Ewood, a Bolton player was sent-off and I got the player wrong for about 5 seconds. I felt like a total idiot. Preston's game at Brighton in March 2006, everything that could go wrong technically was going wrong and I wasn't as cool, calm and collected as I normally am. I even used some bad language which I won't repeat here. Best and worst manager in post match interview? Best - Graeme Souness. Honest opinion, straight down the line; no messing about. If his teams played rubbish he would say so. A lot of people didn't have nice things to say about Graeme, but in his time both with Blackburn and Newcastle, I found him to be superb. Also, I've got to say Billy Davies was excellent to speak to, before or after a game. I suppose it helps when your team hardly ever lose. Worst - Hmmm
who would I like to say? I would rather call them challenging post-match interviewees. Stan Ternent was plain bonkers. Gerard Houllier was always the most defensive person to speak to, and Sir Alex...well, he told me off for talking to him for too long. I love them all really.
Who are your favourite commentators? Barry Davies, Brian Moore and Martin Tyler for football. Syd Waddell, John Gwynne, David Lloyd, Ian Botham, Syd Lowe and David Coleman. All fantastic broadcasters. Ever been a question you wished you'd asked? Question to Graham Taylor: "Why didn't you pick me to play for England when you were manager; you picked everyone else who was useless at football?" Or wished you hadn't? Asking Simon Garner: "Have you ever been to Kirkham?" What sport would you say you are you best at? I am definitely worst at golf! I would probably say football but wouldn't say I was any better than an average defender who loves a tackle. Do you prefer playing or watching? Playing. Nothing beats playing, although watching the Premier League for a living is fantastic. I'm just jealous I'll never be good enough to play with them. What sports do you watch on telly? Football, Cricket (although I am very new to this!), Snooker, Darts (love it!). Basically, if it's on I watch it. Any sports you detest or can't get into? American Football. How on earth they can call it football is beyond me! Your greatest ever sportsman or woman? Bobby Moore. Never saw him play in the flesh, but he remains the only captain ever to lift the World Cup for England. Your greatest ever sports personality? Paul Gascoigne. The Gazza as he was back in 1990 when he had the world at his feet! For a fun night - what players/managers would you want on your table at a sportsmans dinner? Sadly two of them are not here anymore. Brian Clough and George Best, both legends, and both probably excellent company. I heard Tommy Docherty once, he was so funny. I'd also invite Alan Shearer because everyone who knows him says he's really entertaining. The Manchester United team of the 90's who spoilt my teenaged years would certainly not be welcome. Oh, and Kelly Brook could be the waitress at the table! Off the pitch interests: I play 5-a-side football once a week, play squash when the time allows me to. I also get treated to watching the adventures of Iggle Piggle on a daily basis by my daughter. I'm trying to get her in to watching Rainbow! I love spending time with family and friends.
