Sunken passenger plane is a diver's dream in Capernwray

A passenger plane has come in for a soft landing in North Lancashire - it was gently lowered and deliberately sunk in the waters of Capernwray Diving Centre near Carnforth.

The idea is to provide an unusual underwater experience for divers, but it was quite a spectacle for those on dry land too.

Despite appearances this is is no catastrophe - it's a diver's dream. But getting the aircraft to the depths of Jackdaw Quarry caused a few sleepless nights.

In service she flew between Lisbon and the Azores and last flew commercially in 2006. Her final trip was courtesy of a crane into the waters at Capernwray.
