In pictures: Donald's landscapes
Local artist Donald Holden has lived all his life in the Nelson area. He was educated at Nelson Grammar School, prior to training to teach at Cheshire County Training College. Here Donald followed instruction in drawing, painting and basic screen printing
For the next 35 years Donald taught Art in several local schools, ending his career in the mid 1990s as Head of Arts and Technology at Mansfield High School, Brierfield
At the same time Donald worked as a Moderator for the Northern Examinations Board, visiting Schools to assess GCSE students’ work in Art and Design
Since retiring Donald has been painting on a regular basis, aided by many enthusiastic friends from New Longton Artists. As a group they meet regularly to paint and sketch from the landscape, travelling to all corners of the county to find their subjects
Donald’s work is based exclusively from the landscape. Working from drawings and colour notes he experiments with a wide range of materials and methods producing paintings which are about the landscape, rather than a straight transcription
Donald's paintings present a personal response; attempting to extract the essence of "place"
Workshops and demonstrations for Arts Societies and groups of like-minded people form a regular part of his life, along with exhibiting his own work
Donald's paintings, prints and range of greetings cards can be seen at Art Fairs such as The Central Lancashire Fine Art Fair at New Longton in November 2009
Donald's artwork can also be seen in Dyson’s Arts in Barrowford and Clitheroe, Arteology in Colne, and at Pendle Arts Gallery, Pendle Heritage Centre
In October 2009, Donald is planning a major exhibition - 70 @ 70, a "birthday celebration with a difference". Donald can be contacted donhol@ntlworld.com
