Farningham has slowest broadband connection in the UK

It could take Farningham villagers 12 hours to download a movie

The village and parish of Farningham has the slowest broadband in the UK according to research by a broadband comparison site.

The average download speed in Farningham recorded by the survey was just 1.3 megabits per second.

This means it could take 45 minutes to download a music album and 12 hours to download a movie from the internet.

The survey was carried out by Top10.com who did 98,000 speed tests over three months.

Alex Buttle one of the directors of the internet company explained the results: "One of the main reasons that Farningham is so bad is that most providers on the Farningham exchange are not offering ADSL2 broadband connection speeds."

We were quite surprised to see Farningham with the worst broadband speed,
Alex Buttle

"Farningham also struggles because it is a rural area so the distance from people's homes to the BT exchange is quite large."

Joining Farningham as the worst areas in the UK were the border regions in Scotland and Harbury in Warwickshire and Hethersett in Norfolk.

"We were quite surprised to see Farningham with the worst broadband speed," said Alex. "Particularly as in the past it has been areas quite northern and usually in Scotland with the slow speed.

"BT are investing a huge amount of money into bringing the broadband infrastructure up to speed in the UK. They are doing a review of broadband speeds so it may well be that Farningham is in line for improvement.

"We hope that this kind of study brings the black spots to the fore so hopefully BT, potentially in partnership with the Government if there's a funding gap, can really help to sort this situation out."
