Michael Rosen on poetry, and some of the children reading their poems

The former Children's Poet Laureate, Michael Rosen has been to visit Dover Grammar School for Boys for the launch of a new book of poems.

It was part of a collaboration with almost 40 local schools working together to produce the book.

Theresa Buckley, Senior Assistant Head of Dover Grammar School for Boys said, "who knows, we may have some budding poets here".

Sixth formers formatted the book and designed the front cover.

Nine secondary schools and 30 primary school have taken part in the project, the aims of which were to raise aspiration, motivation and self confidence in writing, in preparation for the pupils' exams later in the year.

The sixth form students ran workshops in the local primary schools to help the children write their poems collaboratively. They did the formatting and layout of the book and the art group from Dover Grammar School for Girls designed the front cover.

Michael Rosen was so impressed with the project he wrote the forward for the book

Every child who has written a poem for the book has had it included, and all the young poets were presented with a copy of the book.

Michael Rosen became so interested in the book because it was so inclusive, and he even visited the school to give copies of the books to all involved.

Theresa Buckley said, "I hope that they are going to think about writing poems again but also perhaps they will write in a different style and have a go at doing something they haven't done before. Who knows, we may have some budding poets here, or even a budding Poet Laureate."
